Never a Good Sign…

I had an ART class assignment at the middle school Friday. In addition to the lesson plan there were four detention referral forms.

Pre-filled out with student names!

But…didn’t have to use any of them.

That is great! Sometimes it works out the opposite than what one expect. In this case, in a good way.

Wow! Were you surprised to see the forms already filled out? Have you ever seen that before? Was the class well behaved while you were teaching? What are your thoughts on the teacher already assuming those students would be bad?

"...What are your thoughts on the teacher already assuming"

That she knows her students in the class better than I and that she doesn't expect them to deviate from the norm.

A form is easy to toss if not needed but IF there are any problems, the ones on the form are the ones most likely to be the cause.

I appreciate the heads up. It lets me know who to be watching out for.

I like that idea from the normal teacher because it shows you, as a sub, that she has no problem with you issuing detention if you need to. So many times I've been told that I was too hard on kids because they are not expected to behave for a sub as well as they do for the classroom teacher. I love that this teacher backed you up when she wasn't even there!

I found another trick that worked with junior high students. I will fill out the discipline paper (we call it TRIP at the school I work in) and leave it on the student's desk. If there are anymore problems I simply put the time on the top and send the student off to the principal where the form is handled. If there are no more problems I tear up the paper at the end of the period. So far that has worked REALLY well for me.

Wow! I don't think I've ever seen pre-prepared referral forms. I think students often live up, or down, to our expectations of their behavior. I'm glad the teacher was wrong about those four the day you had them.
