I mentioned earlier that the 6th grade class I was to have today, had a “low expectation of social behavior” when it came to school demeanor. I knew what to expect.
Well, I’m batting 1-2 in the “expectations” department. Today's anticipated disaster with the 6th graders didn’t materialize!

Since the last time I was in this class, the school had instituted a guideline to remove the class hoodlum whenever a sub was in for the teacher. Amazingly, removing that one kid dispelled the dark forces that permeated the social atmosphere I had witnessed twice earlier this year.
The class was actually fun to be with for a change!

Remove that kid as in they don't even get a chance to go to class? That sucks.
I'm sure it's great for the sub. You don't have to deal with that kid and it really does change the dynamics of the class. But removing the kid before they do anything wrong?
Chris,
I believe that he's moved to a different 6th grade class or to the office to do his work for the day.
...and if you ever met this kid you'd know why.
I enjoy reading your blog. Keep up the good work. It would be great if you wrote everyday!
Bravo to the school administrator for taking care of the problem. The hoodlum will hopefully learn that being a distraction does not pay off. I look forward to your other posts!
I find that the class will often notice the difference when "that kid" is removed from the room, whether by an admin or just because they were sick or on a field trip that day. Once the class clues in to how the room COULD be, they become less tolerant of the offending behavior. It takes care of a lot of your classroom management.
