I see 10, and I usually get these kinds of things wrong...
There are definitely 11. Do it systematically. Top to bottom, left to right. There's the 5 little ones, the big one, & 5 middle sized ones forming a plus sign.
11. But it took more than one counting to find them all.
The answer is, indeed, 11 squares
